Dean, School of the Humanities & the Arts
The Humanities
On a basic level, the humanities are a series of disciplines encompassing the ideals of the past that shape the world we live in today. The humanities—literature, creative writing, history, politics, and more—are an invitation into the human experience, an invitation to the heights, depths, triumphs, and tragedies of what it means to be a human being.
The Arts
The arts are a wide range of human practices of creative expression, storytelling, and cultural participation. They encompass multiple diverse modes of thinking, doing and being, in an extremely broad range of media—music, theatre, fine arts, and digital.

Mission
The School of Humanities & the Arts equips students to redeem culture with empathy, curiosity, creativity, excellence, and innovation.
Vision
Students who actively engage in the academic programs in the School of Humanities & the Arts cultivate a deep and thoughtful sense of purpose that enriches life around them beyond their college experience.
We expect our students to respond in today’s world with empathy, an informed sensitivity to the variety of human experience through the study of human culture, society, governance, and behavior.
We foster curiosity, offering engagement with the big questions of life, both contemporary and enduring.
We mentor students to express their creativity by formulating new ideas and ways of thinking and by turning new and imaginative ideas into reality – whether on social media, on stage, in the studio, or in their writing.
We challenge students to excellence, a passionate pursuit of quality.
Through innovation, our students integrate and apply their knowledge, skills, and responsibilities to new settings and complex problems, whatever their future path.
