5 Essential Interview Tips for Recent College Graduates

By Char Von Vogt, Director of Career Services

As a recent college graduate, the job search can be overwhelming, but with the right preparation, you can ace any interview. Here are five essential tips that will help you stand out and land your dream job:

Honesty is key during interviews. While you don’t need to share every personal detail, it’s important to be authentic in your responses. Be truthful about your experiences, strengths, and weaknesses. Avoid fabricating stories or exaggerating your achievements. Your genuine self is exactly what employers are looking for!

Remember, no one else will advocate for you, so it’s up to you to sell your strengths. Think of it as self-promotion, not bragging. Prepare concise answers to common questions and weave in relevant stories that demonstrate your skills and passion. Show how your experiences make you the ideal candidate (review the job description closely and highlight your strengths within that context), but always keep it humble and confident.

Before the interview, research the company’s mission, values, and culture. This will allow you to connect your personal values and passion to the work they’re doing. Speak with enthusiasm about how their goals align with your own, and share how the job excites you. When you express genuine interest, it shows you’re not just looking for any job—you’re looking for this job.

Your appearance speaks volumes before you even say a word. Dress professionally according to the industry you’re applying to. If you’re unsure about the company’s dress code, call HR ahead of time to ask. Alternatively, visit the company or check their social media to observe how employees dress. For your interview, dress one step up from the company’s typical attire to show you’re taking the interview seriously.

Don’t go into an interview unprepared. Take advantage of free resources like Big Interview, available to all Jessup students and alumni. This platform allows you to practice answering common questions and get feedback on your responses. Also, practice with friends, family, mentors, or professors who can provide constructive criticism. The more prepared you are, the more confident you’ll feel during the actual interview.

By following these tips, you’ll be better equipped to showcase your skills, values, and passion. Remember, interviews are your opportunity to demonstrate why you’re the best fit for the role. Good luck!
