Jesus has many names, but in his messianic prophecy, Isaiah records a name I have come to treasure. Everlasting Father.
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). When Isaiah prophesied these words, He was writing during a time and tradition when rulers were seen as the father of their nation. Some rulers were good, many were not, but seven hundred years later, a baby born in Bethlehem would become the greatest of all rulers. Not just any baby, but a child born a King. A King to the nation of Israel, and to all the nations thereafter.
A good King that would usher in a reign of blessing and peace with no end. A Messiah promised to a broken world, who would bring new hope through His Kingdom come. A Kingdom here already and not yet. Here already through His Spirit that dwells within us…and not yet as we await His glorious return.
As we celebrate Advent, let us remember the gift given to our world. An Everlasting Father for an Everlasting Kingdom. Let us live each day as Kingdom people, serving Kingdom purpose while we wait for His triumphant return. For Jesus has gone to prepare a place for us. Just like a good King and Everlasting Father would do.
Thank you, King Jesus. You are the best Christmas gift we could ever receive. We celebrate your royal birth and victory on the cross. For it is that victory that will bring everlasting hope, joy, peace and love for us all. Merry Christmas everyone!
