My Story: Matt George

Sacramento sports enthusiasts might best know Matt George as the charismatic anchor/reporter for ABC10 News and the lively host of the Sacramento Kings podcast, “Locked on Kings.” George’s journey to becoming a prominent sports figure was anything but straightforward, and his story is one of passion, perseverance and providence.

Fresh out of Woodcreek High School in Roseville, George harbored a passion for sports media but lacked direction. Just as he was about to enroll at Sacramento State, he received a life-changing call from Jessup University’s former Sports Information Director, Jeff Bussell. Bussell offered George a unique opportunity to broadcast Warrior sports programs. “Handing a microphone to a freshman? That’s just insanity!” George recalled with a laugh.

Jessup University nurtured George’s passion for sports media, allowing him to explore and grow his talents. He seized the opportunity to broadcast volleyball, soccer, softball, and basketball and even created a weekly sports show, “Warrior Nation,” produced by a team of media students. Jessup’s supportive environment allowed George to dream big and chase his ambitions.

“Jessup didn’t put me in a box,” George said. “They asked me what position I wanted to play and then gave me the ball and told me to score.” This freedom and encouragement helped George thrive. He graduated in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in English with emphasis in journalism and professional writing.

While at Jessup, George met his wife, Brittany LaMar, an NAIA All-American and record-holder in softball. George credits Brittany for keeping him grounded in an industry known for big egos. “She is as unimpressed by what I do as possible,” he joked. The couple, now with a three-year-old son, balance their careers and family life with faith and mutual support.

George’s impressive resume includes five years of broadcasting experience and an internship with Sacramento sports radio KHTK. Over the past 10 years, he has moved up the ranks in Sacramento’s sports media scene, from radio producer to television anchor at ABC10 News.

As a proud Jessup University graduate, George reflects on his journey from the classroom to the broadcast booth and now the anchor desk. Each game he covers and every athlete’s story he tells is a testament to the lessons learned and the unwavering support received from his alma mater. With faith, hard work and the right education, George is living his dream and inspiring the next generation of broadcasters. His story proves that dreams can come true with the right foundation and determination.
