My Story: Alex Medina | Why Hire a Jessup Graduate?

In the bustling legal landscape of California, Alex Medina stands out not just for his expertise, but for his unwavering faith and commitment to integrity. As a dedicated follower of Jesus, a loving husband, and father of four boys, Medina has seamlessly woven his personal values into his professional life, creating a law firm that is as much about faith as it is about legal prowess.

Medina’s journey to faith was marked by a profound turning point in 2002. Just as he was about to graduate from law school, the sudden passing of his father led him to seek solace in spirituality. Guided by his childhood best friend, Medina found his faith in Jesus, a decision that would shape the rest of his life. “I thought that since I was a Christian, I was supposed to be a pastor or a missionary,” Medina recalls. Despite his demanding schedule at a prominent downtown Los Angeles law firm, he attended Fuller Seminary at night, planning to fulfill what he believed was his calling.

However, a pivotal conversation with his friend redirected his path. “The church has plenty of pastors and missionaries. We don’t have enough attorneys,” his friend advised. This revelation led Medina to realize that he could honor God within the realm of law, a mission he has since embraced wholeheartedly.

In 2020, Medina hired his first Jessup alumnus, Kyle Owen, who had graduated with a Business Administration degree in 2012 before pursuing law. Owen quickly proved to be an exceptional attorney. When the time came to hire an administrative assistant, a standout candidate emerged — a recent Jessup graduate. This hire turned out to be a remarkable decision, as she rapidly rose through the ranks to now lead operations for the firm’s mediation practice.

“Our Jessup grads have risen in the ranks so fast because they were prepared to hit the ground running.”

This pattern continued and another Jessup graduate soon joined the firm, excelling in her role and transitioning to a full-time paralegal position. Medina’s firm, Medina McKelvey LLP, has a unique approach to hiring: Entry-level positions serve as a starting point, with employees’ passions and talents being assessed for future roles that best align with their skills. “Our Jessup grads have risen in the ranks so fast because they were prepared to hit the ground running,” Medina notes.

The success of these hires led Medina to actively recruit Jessup graduates. Currently, nearly one-third of the firm’s workforce comprises Jessup alumni. Medina challenges the negative stereotypes often associated with the current generation, praising Jessup grads for their hard work, innovation, entrepreneurial spirit and integrity.

Inspired by the professionalism of Jessup graduates, Medina envisions Jessup becoming a national destination for employers seeking top talent. “The way I see it, Jessup is the place for employers to find their best employees,” he said.
