DEC. 16 | Unquenchable Hope

If something is unquenchable, it cannot be doused, smothered, or put out. It’s impossible to suppress or destroy! Unquenchable hope then, is the ability to withstand the hardest times of life knowing a faithful God is for us!

Imagine that you are desperate to satisfy your thirst but could not drink enough water to accomplish that desire. Imagine a fire that blazes so hot you could not put it out, no matter what you throw on it to smother the flames.

Now imagine hope. A trust in God so robust, so strong, that it could not be extinguished, not be suppressed, and not be quenched!

What would that look like? Perhaps you’ve begun to waiver in your beliefs that God is there and that He loves you. Maybe, especially in this time of shelter in place, you’ve become more depressed, shut-in, and isolated. If some of you are like me, a total extrovert, this time of not hugging or being in close contact with others has been very difficult. But what if you placed all of those concerns in the capable hands of a loving God? What if you had hope once again that God is in control and that He loves you deeply? What if you developed a hope so strong that nothing could put it out, nothing could stop you from believing once again!

How can this kind of unquenchable hope be developed? Let me suggest a few ways. 1) Prayer. Pray daily that God would allow you to believe and trust Him for the best life. 2) Scripture. The Apostle Paul models unquenchable hope: “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39). Are you seeing what I’m seeing? NOTHING can separate us from God’s love. Reading such positive and uplifting verses each day will keep your hope fires burning! 3) Believing Friends. There is nothing like the power of hopeful friends, pouring into our lives to help us make it through the difficulties of life.

Prayer, scripture, and friends. You talking to God, reading His word, and sharing life with friends…now that leads to an unquenchable hope!

Use this Advent season to strengthen these three areas.
