Jessup Theatre Presents Beauty and the Beast

William Jessup University will delight audiences at the start of the holiday season as they present Disney’s Beauty and the Beast slated for November 9, 10, 11, 16 and 17 with the final performance on Sunday, November 18. Friday show times are 8 p.m., Saturday performances are at 2 and 8 p.m. with matinee performances at 2 p.m. on Sundays.

The growing university’s theatre program recently took home 11 Elly Awards from the Sacramento Area Regional Theatre Alliance’s annual award program. Jessup theatre received nine awards in the musical category, including best choreography, costume design, direction, leading male, lighting design, musical direction, set design, sound design, and overall production for their fall production of Scrooge the Musical. The department was also recognized for best lighting and sound design for the comedic Sherlock Holmes: the Hound of the Baskervilles, which was performed for sellout crowds last spring.

Jessup’s winning design and production teams in addition to a talented array of cast members invite the surrounding community to see this classic fairytale come to life onstage featuring the beloved characters and songs including “Be Our Guest”, “Gaston” and the title song, “Beauty and the Beast.”

Ticket holders are encouraged to come an hour before show time to experience a Dickens Village come to life. Participants will be able to do some Christmas shopping, listen to carolers, interact with Dickens characters and experience great food and hot chocolate while creating lasting memories complete with photo opportunities.

Aspects of the pre-show are specifically designed for children including Belle’s Boutique and other interactive activities. Kids are welcomed and encouraged to dress like their favorite fairytale character. There is no additional charge to attend the pre-show experience.

“This preshow will be a fully immersive experience rich with the spirit of the Christmas season and a pinch of fairytale enchantment for our younger audience members” Director Jennifer Martin said. “This is a perfect event to establish or continue a holiday tradition with friends and family.”

Martin has a full-time faculty position at Jessup within Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA). She earned her Masters in Fine Arts in acting from Regent University and a BA in Theater from Azusa Pacific University. Prior to her work as an administrative faculty member in William Jessup’s Theater Department, a position she held since spring 2013, Martin served as an acting instructor for Sierra High Continuation School, Theatrix Productions, and the Governors School for the Arts.

In addition to her teaching experience, Martin is also a founding member of and Associate Artistic Director for Americana Theatre Company, a non-profit 501 (c) (3) professional theater company.

Jessup’s Creative Arts program is the first program of its kind that positions students to meet the emergent demands in artistic professions by training across multiple disciplines. The unique degree program provides both the breadth and depth of opportunities that graduates need in the contemporary marketplace. The program seamlessly blends both practical and theoretical class work across multiple disciplines and offers many co-curricular opportunities.
